Why you need to think of potential and kinetic energy to reach your goals

In physics, there are the complementary concepts of potential energy and kinetic energy.

Potential energy is the energy held by an object because of its position relative to other parts of an energy system.

Kinetic energy is the energy held by an object because of its motion.

On a roller coaster, the cars gain potential energy as they are pulled up the slope. When they go over the top, they convert their potential energy to kinetic energy—and a lot of speed—with the help of gravity.

When you are working towards a goal, you can think of applying these same concepts of potential and kinetic energy to your journey.

Let's say you're starting a business and you want to make a good living. You want to take your potential energy (your skills, your knowledge, your passion) and convert it to kinetic energy (projects, clients, and ultimately dollar bills).

Perhaps you need to build up some potential energy (acquire or improve some skills) before you can go over the top of the roller coaster.

Or perhaps you have plenty of potential energy already—you just need a little push to start going downhill.
