Of Course We Feel Overwhelmed
It’s not so strange that we feel overwhelmed sometimes. We carry a lot of responsibility.
It wasn’t always this way. Just a few centuries ago, most people everywhere were farmers. They took care of their crops or livestock and they took care of their home and family. That was about it.
They weren’t dealing with tax returns or relationship therapy or job applications.
If we go further back, perhaps 12,000 years ago, almost everybody was living the hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
Those people didn’t have to resist the temptations of Instagram and TikTok, of overly dramatic news coverage, or of abundant junk food.
This isn’t naive nostalgia. If you had to choose any period in history to live, you’d better pick right now. We forget it sometimes, but when we think about it, we all appreciate toilets and heated homes and modern medicine.
Still, while today is the best time to be alive, it’s also a complex time. Modern life demands a lot from us. So it’s not so strange that we feel overwhelmed sometimes.
Let’s accept that. Let’s accept that as the cost of living in such a wonderful time in history.
Then let’s take a breath. And let’s take one small step to feel more at ease. And one more step after that.
I’ll see you somewhere on our collective walk.
