Identity crisis? Good!

July 5, 2018

"What do you do?"

That hasn't been my favorite question in the world for the past few years.

Three years ago, I'd answer that I was a litigation consultant. Even though most people didn't know what the litigation part of that meant, it was enough to allow them to mentally label me.

When I quit my job, I started responding that I wasn't working at the moment. Almost everyone would follow up with, "So you study then?" Nope, I wasn't studying either.

For many people, that just did not compute. Here I was, in my twenties, looking healthy—and I wasn't working or studying?!

When I finally figured out that I was suffering from burnout, and I started telling people that, the answer became easier. People could label me again.

These days, I still can't give an answer that's both short and accurate, because I don't know what I do. There are a few promising business ideas and opportunities that I'm exploring, but I haven't settled on one yet.

And you know what? That's okay!

It took a few years, but I've finally accepted that it might take me a while to figure out my new identity.

It's better than sticking with an old identity that no longer fits.

Yours,

— Peter
